I started blogging in 2003. Wow. That's a long time ago!!!

Back in the dark ages of blogging, many of us viewed blogs as online journals. And that is where mine started.

This was before I was married and before I was a mom! Facebook was just gaining traction when I became a mom. Hard to believe.

As the years passed, this blog morphed from a personal journal into more of a book blog as I gave myself room to explore my passion/profession. Eventually, I created a side blog called Crafting by Candlelight where I focused on my creative adventures.

I loved those early years of blogging! The world was still small enough that you could really make connections. I miss the days of creative swaps where different blogs would host swaps and you would have a chance to send some snail mail goodness out into the world! This was also a golden age of creative conferences and craft weekends.

As those things fell away and blogs became more about monetizing and influencing, I started to lose interest. I missed the community and connection. It has been really hard for me to keep up with blogging.

So, as the world changes, so must I.

I am dipping my toe into sharing mini book reviews on Instagram. This will be interspersed within my personal account. I am not interested in monetizing or focusing on gaining followers. I just want to share my deep and abiding love of books with you.

I hope you will stop by occasionally!
I needed a good suspense page-turner and I found one with this book. When I first started reading this book, it made think of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY meets "Single White Female." But it is so much more than that.

Amber Patterson has always desired wealth and status and decides to set her sights on married real estate mogul Jackson Parrish. In order to get close to him, Amber befriends his socialite wife Daphne and begins to insinuate herself into their lives. Her goal? To become the next Mrs. Parrish.

This book was the perfect escapism for me over the weekend. I couldn't put it down. Even though Amber is truly despicable, you can't help admire her and wonder if she will achieve her goals. It is interesting to see how she manages to weasel her way into this wealthy family and begin to chip away at the Parrish marriage. The novel has interesting twists and turns and definitely keeps one's interest.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. This is a really fun novel that would make the perfect vacation or beach read. Fast-paced with intriguing characters. I think fans of BIG LITTLE LIES will really like this one.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-62794586342541355242017-11-01T10:37:00.003-07:002017-11-01T10:37:43.199-07:00BIG LOVE by Scott Stabile

I was in the middle of reading this book when the Sonoma County wildfires came. In all the chaos of packing the car for potential evacuation and being on high alert for two weeks, I misplaced my copy. When I picked up again, I realized its message couldn't be more timely or more needed.

Many people know Scott Stabile through his Facebook page. In this post, he is able to delve more deeply into his messages of love and acceptance while including painful parts of his life that have led him to these messages. Reading about the loss and pain in Stabile's life was very sad and relevant to the types of loss occurring in my own community at this time. Stabile has managed to work his way through those difficult times to come to an understanding of how love has the potential to work in our lives.

A few days ago, I posted this quotation from the book on Instagram:

The books took a few chapters to get going for me. I think Stabile is at his best when he is funny and self-deprecating in a way that allows us to see the flaws in ourselves and embrace them. This allows us to do the same for others. The later chapters in the book were the ones I found myself underlining the most. In the face of tragedy when we feel most vulnerable, it is a good reminder that love and kindness can do so much!

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. A quick read that offers personal anecdotes coupled with reminders about the significance of spreading love and kindness in the world.

(I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher.)

I have to admit that I am often a sucker for sentimental books. I fell hard for A MAN CALLED OVE and THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY and pretty much anything by Fannie Flagg. Sometimes, I just a need a cozy book that will restore my faith in humanity. If you also enjoy a sentimental, sweet story, THE STORY OF ARTHUR TRULUV will be right up your alley.

Arthur Moses is a recent widower who visit his wife Nola's grave every day. Each day, he must pass his neighbor's house. Lucille is invariably on the front porch and they engage in obligatory conversation each day as the only two seniors left on the block. While at the cemetery on one of his visits to his wife's grave, Arthur notices a teenager hiding out. He befriends Maddy and their friendship becomes a catalyst for a chain of events that will change all of their lives.

Although Berg doesn't really cover any new territory with this story, it is incredibly sweet and satisfying. I wish she had taken a little more time with the characters. Arthur, Maddy, and Lucille are wonderful but I felt rushed through the story. Berg needed to go deeper into the characters and the story. I felt there was so much more to tell! I have heard that this is the first in a series of books covering characters in Arthur's orbit. I hope this rumor is true as it might give me a chance to revisit the characters and get to know them better.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. While the story itself feels very familiar, it is enjoyable and the perfect thing to read in times of stress or sadness. The story is uplifting and positive and will renew your faith in humanity like the similar books that have come before.

There are few cold cases that capture the imagination more than that of Lizzie Borden's parents. Did she or didn't she? Sarah Schmidt takes on this sordid tale with her new novel, SEE WHAT I HAVE DONE. In the novel, Schmidt explores the days surrounding the murders from several different perspectives including Lizzie Borden, Emma Borden, Bridget the maid, and enigmatic stranger Benjamin. Each individual has a unique perspective on the events surrounding the murders. The reader sees what was happening in the days leading up to the murders and gets to see a brief recap of events following the murders.

I was so excited for this book. What great subject matter! And I loved the idea that Schmidt wanted to explore the motivations and possible involvement of several different characters. Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. Schmidt has a literary quality to her writing but I often found the plot difficult to follow. The characters were interesting but the story was tedious which is surprising considering the subject matter. The book isn't long but I struggled to finish and found there were no real surprises in the end. While I appreciate what Schmidt was attempting to do with this book, it just didn't work for me.

BOTTOM LINE: Fans of fictionalized true crime may enjoy the different perspectives that Schmidt uses in her novel but this one didn't work for me.

In David Bell's latest novel of suspense, a frantic father tries to discover what happened to his missing teenage daughter. Bill Price's 15-year-old daughter Summer went missing along with her best friend. The two girls are found in a city park. One is dead and one is barely holding on after a severe beating. As Bill struggles to understand what happened to his daughter and her friend, secrets begin to come out that reveal he may not have known his daughter as well as he thought.

Bell is a classic suspense writer. He know how to keep his readers on the edge of their seat. Most chapters end with a cliffhanger that will make you want to keep on going. The novel is also filled with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout the book. It was a very fast read for me because I had to know what happened. I also enjoyed how Bell explores parenting teenagers and how difficult it can be to know what is really going on in their lives.

**MINOR SPOILER ALERT**

I was disappointed with the title. The author sets you up to believe that Summer is dead for a good portion of the book. I keep wondering why the title was BRING HER HOME if Summer is dead. The reader finds out she may not be which explains the title. Seemed like a bit of spoiler to me and ruined some of the twists and turns.

**END OF SPOILER**

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended vacation read. This fast-paced book will keep you engrossed until the end. While I was a little let down by the ending, I enjoyed the read overall. I think parents especially will find this book riveting.

I went through a period in my twenties where I loved reading fiction about wealthy New Yorkers and other celebutantes and their white collar problems. At the time, a whole slew of writers was releasing books like these including Lauren Weisberger and Emma McLaughlin and Candace Bushnell. And, of course, Plum Sykes. It has been a few years since Sykes' last novel so I was excited to see this one come out. But, instead of New York, I was surprised to find that Sykes' latest book takes place in Oxford in the 1980s. And it's a mystery!

Ursula Flowerbutton arrives at Oxford in 1985 with dreams of learning in hallowed halls and writing for the prestigious Cherwell newspaper. Upon her arrival, she meets wealthy American Nancy Feingold who not only becomes a fast friend but also provides Ursula entreé into elite Oxford society. The fun is cut short when Ursula discovers a wealthy classmate murdered in a don's room. Determined to solve the mystery and prove herself worthy to be a journalist at Cherwell, Ursula begins her investigation and starts uncovering all sorts of sordid secrets within the walls of Oxford.

The best part of PARTY GIRLS DIE IN PEARLS were all the wonderful details that Sykes includes about Oxford life. Sykes attended Oxford and fills her book with all sorts of insider information and footnotes to explain cultural phenomena that may not be familiar to younger readers. I felt as if I were reading "Less Than Zero" in an Oxford setting. (and more humor!) The mystery itself is fairly pedestrian. Sykes leaves enough clues that it is fairly easy to figure out where the mystery is heading. The most fun lies in the inside glimpse into life at Oxford and its students during the 1980s. The book is a very fast and enjoyable read. Perfect for your next vacation.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. PARTY GIRLS DIE IN PEARLS is an enjoyable vacation read that is hard to put down.

This one was tough. I am usually a big fan of speculative/dystopian fiction but it has gotten harder for me to enjoy this type of novel in the current geopolitical climate. Books like AMERICAN WAR offer a more plausible glimpse of the future than ever before.

AMERICAN WAR is told primarily in flashbacks and follows one family's experience during the Second American Civil War in the mid- to late 21st Century. The Chestnut family lives in what is left of Louisiana. Rising waters have covered large portions of the United States coastlines and the country is fractured between what is left of the traditional U.S. (The Blue) and the rebels Southern states (the Red). Sarat Chestnut's family falls in the Purple area. Sarat lives with her parents, her older brother, and her twin sister in a modified shipping container and barely get by. Their lives are changed forever when Sarat's father is killed by a rebel suicide bomber while attempting to get a work permit to move his family north. This death sets into motion a chain of events that will eventually have repercussions for the entire nation.

I found this book entirely plausible. Much of the conflict between the southern and northern states seemed to center around fossil fuels. After they are outlawed in the North, the South continues to use them and flout the authority of the North in a resistance reminiscent of the states' rights battle over slavery. In the ensuing war, the nation is left fractured with the rebel states continuing to resist and live under their own governance. South Carolina has been wiped out by an ineradicable disease set off by the federal government. Suicide bombers and terrorists are a facet of everyday life and bomb-dropping drones that can no longer be controlled randomly kill innocent people. It is the stuff of nightmares.

I don't want to give too much away but much of the book focuses on how circumstances can change us and the course of our lives. While it doesn't justify or excuse radical action, it offers a plausible explanation about how one individual can go from innocent to murderer. The characters are interesting and the story is heartbreaking. El Akkad offers very little in the way of hope or comfort.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. This wasn't pleasure reading but it was fascinating and thought-provoking. As we watch events unfold in the book, it is difficult not to draw parallels with some of what is happening around us today. We can only hope for a happier ending than El Akkad gives us.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-35725239279067426302017-05-10T08:00:00.000-07:002017-05-10T08:17:27.779-07:00THE EXPLORERS: THE DOOR IN THE ALLEY by Adrienne Kress

When I was a child, I dreamed of adventure in far-off places. I think this was mostly fueled by the subscription to NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC that my grandfather bought me along with "Indiana Jones." The idea of exploring new places and cultures became so ingrained in me that I eventually went on to get an advanced degree in Anthropology. Oddly enough, I never discovered a new culture or rare artifact. Most of my travel has been done in museums. But I still dream of adventure and discovery.

THE EXPLORERS immediately appealed to my inner child--the one who still dreams of being a part of a secret society of explorers who travel the world. The book whimsically begins with a pig in a tiny hat. How can one not be drawn in by that? 12-year-old Sebastian is a well-behaved, responsible young man studying math and science at a special school. His no-nonsense background does not prepare him for a run-in with a little pig wearing a hat. After changing his regular route from school one day, Sebastian and his friend encounter an unfamiliar alley with an unfamiliar door. The door has a plaque beside it that reads: The Explorers Society. After the initial encounter, Sebastian can't stop thinking about the mysterious door and returns to the alley where he runs into the little pig with a hat. This encounter provides with him an introduction into the mysterious Explorers Society where he begins a kind of internship/indentured servitude.

Sebastian discovers all sorts of fascinating things in the Society while attending to his various chores. After being encouraged by Society members to "do something inappropriate," Sebastian discovers a hidden wooden box in a wall containing information about ANOTHER mysterious group of explorers called the Filipendulous Five. When Sebastian attempts to learn more about this group of adventurers, his efforts are firmly rebuffed. Just when he is about to give up, he runs into a girl named Evie who has been thrown out of the Society after attempting to find help. Evie is an orphan. Until recently, she ate dinner once a week with a bland couple named the Andersons. At the last dinner, the evening took an unexpected turn when some sinister men forced their way into the home of the Andersons and attacked them and burned the house. Evie managed to escape with instructions directing her to find help at The Explorers Society. As it turns out, Evie is the granddaughter of one of the Filipendulous Five. Evie and Sebastian decide to find out what happened to the Filipendulous Five, to uncover the intentions of the sinister men, and to try and discover the whereabouts of Evie's missing grandfather.

The book is filled with interesting and eccentric characters and the two children are lovely. While there is quite a bit of adventure-style peril, it is on a par with a "Spy Kids" type movie and not age inappropriate. The book also contains a great deal of humor which tempers the suspense. The book ends on a cliffhanger leaving readers anxiously awaiting the next installment. All in all, it's a great choice for kids looking for an exciting read and would be a great choice for Summer reading.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. This book kept me entertained as an adult. The main characters were likeable and I enjoyed the quirky details in the story along with the perfect amount of peril and adventure. Looking forward to the next book!Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-74181639713153475902017-02-09T11:32:00.001-08:002017-02-13T10:08:55.647-08:00I SEE YOU by Clare Mackintosh

I have definitely been in the mood for a good suspense book and this one has all the ingredients for a great vacation read. On her commute on the London Underground, Zoe Walker spots her photograph in the classified section in an ad for a mysterious site called "FindTheOne.com." Zoe is surprised but not overly disturbed until she reads a story about a victim of a recent violent crime and realizes that woman was featured in the same ad. Zoe begins to draw connections between the women featured in the ad and violent crimes that have been happening. Desperate to find help before she becomes the next victim, Zoe reaches out to Detective Kelly Swift. The two women must work together to find the person behind the mysterious ads before another woman becomes a victim.

A few years ago, I read a book by Claire Kendal called THE BOOK OF YOU about a stalker and I SEE YOU reminded me a lot of that book. However, Mackintosh's book adds a modern touch of technology and visibility. With all of the cameras that surround us every day and all of the focus on connectedness on the internet, it is easier than ever to find details on strangers. The whole premise is unsettling. I appreciated the fact that it wasn't easy to figure out what was going to happen. The ending wasn't as cut and dry as I expected it to be. The twist at the end was a little hard to believe but it definitely left me with a chill.

Overall, this book would make a terrific vacation read. It is fast-paced and definitely holds one's interest. While I don't think I would ever read it again, it was very entertaining and I will feel very different about public transportation from now on!

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended as a vacation read. Throw this one in your bag or download the ebook for your next vacation. You will want to read this one in a bright, sunny location to offset the the creepiness factor.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-63849056573321514222017-01-26T15:30:00.001-08:002017-01-26T15:34:27.719-08:00What's Next?

We are almost a month into 2017 and I am trying to plow through as many books as possible.

Completed in January 2017:

A SIMPLE FAVOR by Darcey Bell
A GAMBLER'S ANATOMY by Jonathan Lethem
THE ROANOKE GIRLS by Amy Engel
NIGHT OF FIRE by Colin Thubron
NEWS OF THE WORLD by Paulette Jiles

I am also thisclose to finishing PRESENT OVER PERFECT by Shauna Niequist.

Of my completed January reads, I would recommend NIGHT OF FIRE and NEWS OF THE WORLD. I was surprised by NEWS OF THE WORLD. I really didn't like Jiles' COLOR OF LIGHTNING and didn't even finish it. NEWS OF THE WORLD was short but sweet. A lovely character study of an old man and his unlikely connection with a young rescued Native American captive. NIGHT OF FIRE was fantastic. It was almost like a collection of short stories loosely held together by a fire. In the story, a divided Victorian building catches on fire. During the night of fire, the reader visits each of the apartments and learns the stories of the inhabitants. I was completely drawn in by the book. And I ended up with lots of questions! I handed my copy off to my friend Megan and I hope we can have a good discussion when she finishes it.

Although I really enjoy Lethem and think he is a gifted writer, GAMBLER'S ANATOMY was not one of my favorites. A SIMPLE FAVOR tried too hard to be the next GONE GIRL. It would be a good vacation read but is ultimately forgettable. THE ROANOKE GIRLS was a big disappointment. It sounded so intriguing! I am always a sucker for "family secret" books (as my regular readers know.) This one was over the top. The family secret was too extreme and the whole book just didn't work.

Looking forward to seeing what February brings!

I am really craving books that will inspire me and comfort me this year. Non-fiction and fiction.
I read a lot of suspense in 2016 but, as the year went on, I found myself drawn to comforting books about small towns, books, and people being good to people. So, my favorites were probably MAN CALLED OVE, READERS OF BROKEN WHEEL RECOMMEND, and THE WHOLE TOWN'S TALKING. Consider them the book version of comfort food!

I am excited to begin a new year of reading. As usual, I challenge myself to read 52 books a year. My focus is primarily literary fiction but I am always up for a good suspense/mystery novel. Longtime readers know I have a special weak spot for Gothic/family secret mysteries.

I am a long-time fan of Fannie Flagg. She is such a gifted storyteller and her books just make you feel good. Last week, I was down with a really bad cold. I had Flagg's newest book in my library bag and that was my companion while I was ill. It was the perfect read not only for a sick bed but also for someone who has been feeling down about the world in general lately.

THE WHOLE TOWN'S TALKING tells the story of the town of Elmwood Springs in Missouri from its founding by Swedish dairy farmer Lordor Nordstorm in the 1800s to its disintegration around the year 2020. The story begins with Lordor's founding of the town and his search for the perfect mail-order bride. We learn about the founding families of the town and how they came together to do everything from plan the very first cemetery in town (Still Meadows) to the creation of a real downtown business district and on to the future. Readers follow the stories of these intrepid Swedes and their descendents as they live and love and experience a variety of calamities. At first, the title appears to be about the good-natured gossip that occurs around a small town. But then, readers learn that Still Meadows may be anything but "still."

This book is absolutely charming. It is so easy to get caught up in the stories of these characters as we follow them through establishing a town and various wars and economic booms and hardships. There is sadness along the way but it is mitigated in a very special way. As the book ends around the year 2020, it feels bittersweet but ends on an ultimate note of hope that leaves you feeling good.

BOTTOM LINE: Highly recommended. A great read for when you need a little hope in your life. An excellent "feel good" read.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-62170809949433222302016-11-15T15:05:00.000-08:002017-02-09T11:32:46.192-08:00Winter StoriesEach year, my son and I get out FIRESIDE STORIES from Barefoot Books right before Halloween. The first tale is meant to be read on Halloween. We were a few days late this year. It is called "The Lonely Boatman" from Scotland and is more mysterious than spooky. Even though we don't get where we live in California, my son insisted reading the next tale which is meant to be read on the first snowfall.

We'll read the next tale on Christmas Eve.

My son ALWAYS insists we have a fire going when we read from the book. I am so happy that Barefoot Books FINALLY reissued this out of print title. Now, you can get it too!

I love reading out loud to my son by the fire but sometimes my voice gets tired, That is where Sparkle Stories comes into play!

A few years ago, Sparkle Stories released an audio Advent calendar. For the 25 days leading up to Christmas, the whole family sat down and listened to a 10-25 minute story each evening. It was a wonderful way to spend time together. The original audio Advent calendar is still available but they will be releasing a new version this holiday season from "Junkyard Tales."
Last year, my family entered the world of competitive sports with soccer and basketball. I was not an athletic child but my son loves sports. This is all new to me. As a parent, you hear stories about sporting events and the bad behavior of other parents. So far, I haven't witnessed any of this. However, if we continue with sports, I know this issue will come up. Even at a very low, fairly non-competitive level, I often find myself getting overly involved with the game from the sidelines. I call my son's name and shout at him what I think he should be doing. After reading this book, I think I may have to change my behavior.

In his book, Lynch ties together elements of psychology and spiritual principles to give parents and coaches a game plan for giving children positive experiences in organized sports. Lynch points out that, "the magic of sport can influence a significant portion of a child's physical and emotional development for years to come. These include learning how to fail, how to succeed, how to overcome self-doubt, how to get stronger mentally and emotionally, and how to develop selflessness." Sounds good, right? But what happens when parents and coaches intervene in this process in negative ways? Lynch provides a bunch of "food for thought" as well as offering concrete ways to give children positive experiences utilizing tools such as meditation, compassion, visualization, and more. He ends the book with a Code of Conduct for adults so that our kids can truly enjoy organized sports without negative influence.

As a parent, I found this book very useful and easy to read. Especially as my son enters competitive basketball season! I will be passing it on to my son's soccer coach and hope to share it with other parents as well. These simple reminders can help our kids get all of the good stuff out of organized sports and avoid the dreaded "parental interference" from the sidelines.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. A great tool for parents and coaches.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-69349539693429599722016-10-03T13:21:00.003-07:002017-02-09T11:33:20.131-08:00FILL THE SKY by Katherine Sherbrooke

I think that sometimes a book will find you at just the right moment in your life. Sometimes, we have to be in a particular frame of mind in order to be open to a story. I think FILL THE SKY came at just the right moment for me.

FILL THE SKY follows three forty-something friends who have been friends since they were college roommates. Tess is an independent biotech entrepreneur who has a hard time letting people in. Joline is a life coach who deeply believes in new age methods of healing. Ellie is a wife and mother who is dying of lung cancer. The three friends head to Ecuador on a quest to visit traditional healers who may be able to help heal Ellie. Each of the women comes to Ecuador with an important life choice to make.

I loved the fact that this book focused on forty-something women. It can be hard to find books like that these days. Each of the women was strong and powerful in her own way and brought unique gifts to the journey. I loved seeing how each woman struggled with her own problems while on this quest for healing. Sherbrooke shared the healing ceremonies in a way that made them seem beautiful instead of hokey. While each woman had to confront some painful truths while on the journey, I loved how the book had an underlying sense of hope. I found the ending to be tremendously satisfying.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. This is a lovely story of friendship and healing. All of the characters were sympathetic and interesting and the setting was so appealing that it made me want to jump on a plane to Ecuador. Save this one for fireside or vacation reading.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-27781129976333214522016-09-16T13:11:00.000-07:002016-09-16T13:11:14.540-07:00EVEN SUPERHEROES HAVE BAD DAYS by Shelly Becker

I absolutely adore EVEN SUPERHEROES HAVE BAD DAYS by Shelly Becker and illustrated by Eda Kaban. First of all, everyone loves superheroes. And this book has superheroes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and genders. In this story, we see that superheroes sometimes have bad days and moments where they aren't their best selves. The illustrations are wonderful. I was charmed by the very first page where a very cranky superhero kicks over a fire hydrant. In the following pages, we seeing different superheroes throwing all sorts of tantrums as they deal with everyday stressors. The story reminds us, however, that superheroes have CHOICES about how they react. It gives examples about other more positive choices that could be made in dealing with bad days such as exercise and helping other people. Or even just engaging in some centering meditation:

The book also reminds us that it is okay for us to have bad days and yucky feelings. We can always recover and go back to saving the world.

While this picture book is aimed at younger children, I felt it was very timely for my 8-year-old. Going back to school and dealing with new routines and social interactions can be stressful and there are often cranky days after school. But I love how the book validates those feelings while giving concrete examples of how to deal with them in a very funny way.

BOTTOM LINE: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I absolutely loved this book. Wonderful concept and illustrations. A great book to have in one's "parental toolbox."Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-82448828048609452942016-07-25T10:06:00.001-07:002016-07-25T10:06:26.022-07:00LEAVING LUCY PEAR by Anna Solomon

Faced with the prospect of having her newborn daughter taken from her and put into a home, unwed Beatrice Haven sneaks out of her aunt and uncle's house on night and leaves her baby under a pear tree in the hope that the people who steal the pears every year will find her. She stays hidden until she sees another woman carry her daughter away and then leaves to attempt to move forward from her shameful secret. Beatrice comes from a wealthy Jewish family and hopes to move on and become a pianist. Ten years later, Beatrice returns to her ailing uncle's Cape Ann home to take care of him. A local Irish woman named Emma Murphy comes to help care for Beatrice's uncle. Emma is the woman who rescued the infant below the pear tree ten years before.

Set in the 1920s, Solomon captures a moment in time when women were on the verge of getting the vote and becoming more independent but still faced the shame of extramarital sex and unwed pregnancy. The story focuses on Beatrice and Emma and Lucy Pear, the daughter Beatrice left behind. Solomon does a wonderful job portraying Beatrice's conflict about the abandonment of her child and that conflict led to mental illness. I also appreciated the complex feelings that Emma goes through when coming to terms with meeting the mother of her adopted daughter. Lucy Pear herself is a fascinating character who is wise beyond her years. Solomon does a great job showing how families come in different shapes and sizes and the dangers of not being true to oneself.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. I really enjoyed this one. I thought the characters were interesting and I loved the inclusion of lots of different issues during the 1920s including racism, birth control, union issues, politics, and the social ramifications of a young woman giving birth outside of marriage at that time. CAN YOU CANOE? is another charming book/music CD combo from Sterling. I have always been a big fan of books that come with CDs. There is something special about reading along with the spoken word or hearing music as you look at illustrations. Especially for young children. When I heard about the subject matter of this latest release, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it!

My son is a Cub Scout and we have been trying to do more camping and exploring. In CAN YOU CANOE?, the Okee Dokee Brothers explore the great outdoors throughout the United States with toe-tapping songs and music. Brandon Reese's illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to the music and lyrics and are filled with lots of fun details.

We had a hard time deciding which songs were our favorites. I enjoyed "Black Bear Mama" because it reminds me of what a Mama Bear I can be. Plus, it is super fun to sing and includes a nod to one of our favorite folk songs "Jenny Jenkins." My husband got a good laugh out of "Campin' Tent." My son enjoyed "Jamboree" with its rollicking rhythms.

We are hoping to share some of these songs with our camping buddies this Summer. I loved all the different types of folk music represented in the book and I also enjoyed how the authors included a map at the back of the book that showed where the inspiration for each song came from. I have a feeling this will be one of our soundtracks of Summer!

Teo Avelar is a young medical student who lives with his paraplegic mother. As the book begins, he is exploring the newfound emotions he is feeling about a woman in life. This seems natural enough until the reader discovers that the woman is the corpse he works on in his anatomy class. At a party, Teo is distracted from his corpse when he meets vivacious Clarice. Clarice is an aspiring screenwriter working on a screenplay called "Perfect Days." Teo becomes obssessed with Clarice and begins to stalk her. When he discovers that she is getting ready to leave town to work on her screenplay at a remote resort, he takes drastic measures. Convinced that he can persuade Clarice to love him, Teo takes more and more extreme measures to maintain control and try to win her love.

This book was creepy and disturbing in the way that King's "Misery" made us fear obssession. Teo is such a damaged and sick person. His complete lack of true emotion and empathy are chilling. The story definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait to find out how Teo will manage to continue to control and hide Clarice. I think the marketing department over at Penguin were absolutely geniuses when they put a sticker on the cover of the galley encouraging readers to let them know on social media when they arrived at a certain page. As I got closer to that page, I got more and more excited. And it was definitely chilling! It reminded me of a certain movie but I can't tell you the title without giving away a major plot point. (Scroll down to the bottom of the review for a spoiler)

While I found the premise fascinating and the story was definitely creepy, I wouldn't say it was enjoyable. Teo is definitely a very creepy character and I think the ending will be disturbing and/or unsatisfying for some readers. However, this would make a great vacation read. Especially if you are headed someplace tropical. Or, since much of the action in this creepy book takes place on beaches, perhaps it would be better to read in a snowbound cabin.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended for fans of suspense and psychological thrillers. The content may be difficult for some people. There are many hair-raising moments within the book and I often find stories of obsession to be particularly frightening. Teo is definitely a frightening character and this could make a very interesting movie.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">While this book has been suggested for the Young Adult reader, I think it is most appropriate for high school age students and beyond. There is some very difficult content within the book. The story is beautifully lyrical and the characters are complex and interesting. However, the narrative may be difficult for some to understand. Much has to be inferred rather than explicitly spelled out. Readers may draw different conclusions about both the motives of the characters and who they really are. Even the ending is ambiguous. The story offers a different look at WWII Poland as told through the eyes of people living on the fringe rather than directly on the war front. I think this book could offer some great discussion for book club groups as readers puzzle out the meaning of different moments within the story.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. A lovely and often heartbreaking look at the hard lessons of war. Readers who like very clear cut motives and endings may struggle with this one. There are no definitive explanations of character motives or even of what happens at the end. Much like war itself.
Geraldine Brooks has a real talent for helping readers connect to history in a very personal way. In her latest book, she turns to the Biblical story of David for inspiration. We are given the basic of David's life in the Bible. We know of his fame in youth from his battle with Goliath. We know of his difficult rise to power through conflict with Saul and the punishment brought on through his misstep with Bathsheba. We also know of his famed son Solomon. Brooks takes the bare bones of David's story and fleshes them out so that readers can see David in his his flawed glory.

THE SECRET CHORD is told from the perspective of the prophet Nathan. Brooks uses the traditional Hebrew names in the book so Nathan is referred to as "Natan" and Solomon as "Shlomo." The book begins with Natan looking back on his life with David and remembering one of the tasks that David gave to him. When David no longer took to the battle field, he grew restless and lacked occupation. Natan took the project of writing David's biography and left to interview the key figures in David's life. Through the stories of these characters as well as Natan's own memories, we begin to see the story of David come to life. It is a far darker and unpleasant story than the Sunday School version. However, David's flaws humanize him as much as they also tarnish his golden image.

As someone who regularly attends church and teaches Sunday School, I found myself drawn into this story on a very personal level. I am not sure how the experience would change for someone who is either not religious or not at all familiar with David's story in any form. One of the things I found so interesting about this book was comparing my memory of David's story with the one that Brooks presents in the book. It definitely made me want to get out my Bible and go back over the Biblical story of David.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. I found this book to be quite enjoyable. Some more conservative Christians may take issue with David's portrayal but I found it compelling and sympathetic. When the book was over, I found myself wanting more. Perhaps a follow-up on the life of Solomon?
I am embarrassed to say I have never read FEAR OF FLYING. It seems like a serious reading omission for any feminist worth her salt. After reading FEAR OF DYING, I have decided I need to immediately run to the library and pick up the one I missed. Jong returns to the familiar territory of sexuality and marriage with FEAR OF DYING. Vanessa is a 60-year-old actress happily married to a man 25 years her senior. Vanessa's parents are both very old and ill. She is facing the hard realities of age while fighting to remain youthful and relevant. In an attempt to deal with everything happening in her life, Vanessa decides to post an ad in a Tinder-like service called Zipless in the hope of making a sexual connection and feeling alive again.

There is a lot going on in this novel. I would say Vanessa's frustrated sexuality is probably one of the least interesting parts of the novel. I love the fact that Jong is delving into the complexities of life at 60 for women. When I was in my twenties, I looked at the women in "Sex and the City" who were in their thirties and forties and marveled at how glamorous they were! Now, I am 40 and looking ahead to Vanessa and her peers for guidance as to what comes next. Instead of dealing with common aging subjects such as menopause and body changes, Jong instead chooses to focus on not only desire and sex but also at the complex emotions that rise out of the deaths of our parents. The fact that Vanessa's husband is so much older than her also offers an interesting side to the story. The whole book gave me a lot to think about.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended. I can't really explain why but I loved this book. I thought Vanessa was a wonderful character and found her struggles with death and aging incredibly compelling and interesting. The ending was a little out there but I thought the book was really terrific overall.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498097.post-68370123095305931852015-08-26T09:07:00.000-07:002015-09-02T09:08:00.781-07:00ALLY-SAURUS AND THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL by Richard Torrey

When my son started Kindergarten two years ago, I was afraid about what knew social pressures he would face. Our Back to School theme for that year was taken from Sting: "Be Yourself No Matter What They Say." I didn't want him to lose those parts of himself that were so special just to fit in with the other kids. So far so good! If this book had been around two years ago, it would definitely have been one of his first day of school gifts.

ALLY-SAURUS AND THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL follows the adventures of an imaginative little girl named Ally who loves dinosaurs and likes to pretend that she is one. Ally hopes to meet other dinosaur-loving children at school. Ally quickly discovers that not all kids love dinosaurs as much as she does. Some love space and some love lions and some even like (gasp!) princesses. Ally has a difficult moment with the "princesses" when they tell her that dinosaurs are not allowed to eat at their table. She quickly meets other friends, however, and the children figure out how to play together in all their imaginative forms.

The illustrations in this book are so charming. I love that Ally and her friends reveal their alternate identities through child-like scribbles.
I also really enjoyed how the book included some conflict and demonstrated how the children worked through this conflict. I think it is important that children understand that they will be facing new ideas and situations at school and that there are ways to figure out how to work out differences in a positive way. The book is very sweet and I loved how it ended with a visit to the school library!

BOTTOM LINE: Highly recommended! Very sweet illustrations and a charming message about being yourself while letting others be themselves as well.Amy M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10851557242036545042noreply@blogger.com0
